Boise State University has named John Buckwalter as provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Buckwalter joins Boise State after serving as the Betty L. Tointon endowed dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences at Kansas State University, as well as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology.
“John Buckwalter is an innovative, strong, and compassionate leader who received positive support from Deans, our Faculty Senate, and a wide range of campus constituents. People who have worked closely with him throughout his career have admired his ability to make extraordinary things happen all while caring deeply for each of the people that those projects touched, from faculty to staff to students. He has the courage to step into and address difficulties, as well as the creativity to find meaningful pathways through challenges. Interdisciplinary research is all the rage. Now, more often than not, graduate scholarship seeks to transverse traditional disciplines to create new areas of academic study. But what research falls at the intersection of hydrologic sciences, materials science and engineering, communication, geophysics, and biomolecular sciences?
Trick question; none currently. However, that unique compilation of research areas represents this year’s Boise State Three Minute Thesis (3MT) winners.
The Graduate College hosted the sixth annual 3MT competition as a live webinar on Feb. 2. The 3MT is a global competition that challenges graduate students to present their scholarship in just three minutes or less using one slide. The 16 finalists contended for a $750 first place award, $500 second place award, $250 third place award, and an $150 honorable mention award, as determined by a six-person panel of distinguished judges from the B

On a good day, public speaking can prompt nerves in the most eloquent of speakers. However, being asked to present one’s graduate scholarship in plain language and in three minutes or less? That takes the challenge to a whole new level.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a global competition that calls for graduate students to present their scholarship in just three minutes and with one slide. The Boise State 3MT competition will be a live webinar held at 10 a.m. to noon. on Tuesday, Feb. 2. This event celebrates the exciting research taking place at Boise State and highlights graduate students who are working to find solutions to real-world challenges. The campus community is invited and encouraged to attend the competition.
