Wicker reflects on America s fallen heroes | Columns

Each Memorial Day, Americans pause to reflect on the courageous men and women who have died in service to our country. Those we honor include the first patriots of 1776 who gave their lives for independence, the modern-day warriors who fell in Iraq and Afghanistan, and all those in between who have died to keep us safe. These fallen heroes, spanning many generations, are forever bound together by their shared bonds of sacrifice. Memorial Day is an important reminder that the freedoms we enjoy are not free. Our liberties have been purchased on the battlefield by fellow Americans who served a cause greater than themselves. Their example should inspire us all to live lives worthy of their sacrifice and to renew our commitment to serving others, each in our own way.

Local VFW post celebrates its 75th anniversary

Inside the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7110, veterans gather to talk about their families, watch sports and laugh over a beer.  But this is not “your grandfather’s VFW,” said Motorcycle Group 20 secretary Teresa Lopez, whose husband served in Vietnam and is a member. The veterans mainly work hard helping local veterans, planning fundraising, and participating in local events to support the greater central Texas community.  An active organization since 1946, it is celebrating its 75th anniversary.  Auxiliary president Ralph Guerrero holds a coin made for the 75th anniversary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7110 on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. WATCH NOW: 10-member team runs downtown for 22 hours to raise awareness of high veteran suicide rate

Members of the downtown Lynchburg community are pretty used to seeing veterans and patriots every Friday for the Support Our Troops rallies, but something different took place on those steps Tuesday and Wednesday. A group of men and women wearing 22-pound flak vests with armor plates ran for 22 hours straight to honor the lives of the 22 veterans who commit suicide in the United States each day. The Shepherd’s Men is a 10-member team of active duty, medically retired and honorably discharged servicemen and civilian patriots dedicated to raising money and awareness for the Atlanta-based Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative.

WWII Vet Who Turned 97 on Verge of Losing His House so Biker Club Step In on His Birthday A World War II veteran who turned 97 years old earlier this month received a welcome gift from a local biker club in Maine. When the Garry Owen Motorcycle Club learned that the town had foreclosed on Army veteran Joey Comeau’s home in Ellsworth, they knew they had to step in. The biker club quickly mobilized to raise funds for Comeau, who turned 97 on May 13. They set up a barbecue and held signs on Bangor Road, encouraging motorists to contribute toward paying some of the veteran’s taxes and saving his home.
