ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Thursday said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government fully believed in the basic, constitutional and democratic right of freedom of expression. Presiding over a meeting of the office bearers of Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) via video link, he said all possible steps would be taken for the development of media industry and promotion of freedom of press. Electronic media played a vital role in raising awareness among the people, he added. “We have to ensure across the board transparency as resolving problems was our topmost priority,” he said.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz Thursday discussed with the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) through a video conference FM radio licences and the National Digital Cable Policy-2021. The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Shahira Shahid, Pemra Chairman Muhammad Saleem Baig, PID PIO Sohail Ali Khan, DG IP Manzoor Ali Memon and other officials. The PBA was represented by Chairman Mian Amir Mahmood, Secretary General Shakeel Masood, Senior Vice Chairman Salman Iqbal, Vice Chairman Mir Ibrahim, ‘substitute’ convener Tahir A Khan and others. The meeting discussed FM radio licences and the National Digital Cable Policy 2021 in the light of the Supreme Court decision. “The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government firmly believes in the constitutional, fundamental and democratic right to freedom of expression. In a special hearing held at the Parliament House in Islamabad on Tuesday, the Committee Chairman Shehryar Khan Afridi led the questioning of George Salama, who heads the Twitter regional office in the United Arab Emirates. Shehryar Afridi questioned George about the Twitter policy on human rights and freedom of speech and whether Twitter regulations did not conform to the UN charter on freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

LHC CJ Muhammad Qasim Khan directed FIA to initiate proceedings against YouTube channels disparaging the judiciary LAHORE: Chief Justice (CJ) Lahore High Court Qasim Khan on Thursday ordered the director general FIA to constitute a committee to examine all YouTube channels as well other social media accounts running videos against the judiciary and to initiate proceedings against them. The chief justice was hearing a plea against commissioners, assistant commissioners and deputy commissioners of the province for allegedly refusing court’s orders, staging a protest and raising slogans against the judiciary. The CJ asked the chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), Muhammad Saleem Baig, whether it could be considered freedom of speech if an individual disrespects and uses abusive language against the judiciary and questioned what rules would then be applied for appropriate action in such a case.

Pakistan grants Landing Rights Permission to Russian TV Russia Today (RT TV) February 2, 2021 ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Russian TV Channel RT on Tuesday officially received the Landing Rights in Pakistan from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). The PEMRA granted the Landing Rights Permission for Foreign Satellite TV Channel to the “Russian Today (RT TV)” for the “News & Current Affairs” Category, enabling the latter to air its transmission in Pakistan through the available Cable network. The Signing Ceremony was held at the PEMRA Headquarters in Islamabad on Tuesday. The Chairman PEMRA Muhammad Saleem Baig presented the documents to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RUPA MEDIA (SMC-PVT) Limited Dr. Shahid Hasan.
