Rains prove boon for some crops, bane for others July 21, 2021 KARACHI: Recent rains may have benefited other crops but have partially damaged date palm crop by the time of harvest, growers said on Tuesday. “Recent rains were good for vegetables crops and others including cotton, paddy and sugarcane,” said Mehmood Nawaz Shah, senior vice president Sindh Abadgar Board, talking to The News. He said the province was facing acute irrigation water shortage and water level was down in the Indus River till last week. “This monsoon spell has somewhat offset the water shortage,” Shah added He said although the price of cotton was affected by a few hundred rupees per maund, the plants had gained from the froms. “Leaves were cleaned in rain, which also removed the pests,” he said adding, “Overall, the rains proved a boon for cotton”.

Sindh to provide Rs3bln subsidies to small farmers on fertilisers July 1, 2021 KARACHI: Sindh government has announced Rs3 billion subsidies for small farmers in the province during FY21-22, Provincial Minister for Agriculture Muhammad Ismail Rahu said. Addressing a press conference at Sindh Assembly building on Wednesday, the provincial minister said that the subsidy would be provided to peasants on fertiliser via a “Peoples Hari (peasant) Card”. Sindh government would also establish 16 cold storages during that period with the support of growers. “The provincial government would provide 80 percent share of the cost while 20 percent expenses would be met by the growers,” the minister said.

Growers await support price amid new cotton arrivals Business May 23, 2021 KARACHI: Partial trading started at the local market with the arrival of new cottonseed after long Eid holidays; however growers are still waiting for the support price, traders said. Ginners were seen purchasing cottonseed at the rate of Rs5,000 to Rs5,500 per 40-kg, marking the beginning of new cotton season. Usually, cotton season starts in July in Pakistan and ends in June. Besides, some deals of new cotton were also witnessed. One such deal of Sindh cotton was recorded in Burewala at Rs12,500 per maund, whose delivery would be given between June 10 to 20. Similarly, a deal of 600 bales of Tando Adam and a deal of 200 bales of Sanghar were finanlised at Rs12,200 per maund with delivery from June 10 to 20.
