No more late fee for after-hours Muslim burials, says MJC By African News Agency Share CAPE TOWN - The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has met with the Moslem Cemetery Board and has come to the agreement that no penalty fees will need to be paid by the members of the public if arriving after hours. In a statement released, second deputy president of the MJC, Shaykh Riad Fataar said they had met with the cemetery board, following last week’s public outcry regarding a R500 penalty fee which was charged for burials arriving at the Mowbray Cemetery after hours. Previously, secretary of the board, Fazloodien Abrahams, said this fee was communicated to undertakers in November last year and stipulates that the levy pertains to janazas that take place after operating hours, which end at 4.30pm.

A video circulating on social media shows a group of men paying money to a madala at Mowbray Cemetery. “So for every hour it is R500? Tjo!” said a man recording the video.  The video has sparked outrage as people want answers on why grieving families are charged a penalty after hours.

A video has gone viral on social media showing money being paid to a burial supervisor at the cemetery gate to have a body buried after the cemetery had been closed. Community activist Armien Albertyn of the Shape political party, said the cost was put in place to rip off the poor. “We as a community are gravely saddened by the video that went around where our Moslem brethren had to pay an extra R500 for being a half hour late, in these difficult times of lockdown and Covid. Now they want to kill the poor people financially. Also, where is the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) on this matter?

Levy is for after-hour burials, says Moslem Cemetery Board By ANA Reporter Share Cape Town – An Islamic cemetery board has confirmed that a levy will be charged for after-hour burials. This comes after a video went viral on social media, showing men at the Mowbray Muslim Cemetery in Cape Town paying for entrance to bury their loved one. In the video, men in Muslim attire can be seen standing at a locked gate, handing over money through the bars of the gate to the man while a voice states it costs R500 for every hour the janaza (funeral) is late at its gravesite.
