FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - A proposed a $45.5 million downtown residential, retail and office development and parking deck will not happen after the Florence City Council turned down the developerâs request for funding.
According to our news partners at The Times Daily, Developer James Bobo had requested nearly $12.8 million to help with parking, including a parking deck. Council president Dick Jordan sent him a letter last week turning down the request.
âThat project obviously is not going to work without that parking deck,â Bobo said.

FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - After years of building partnerships for the Salvation Army of the Shoals, Captains Ben and Wendy Deuel roles as field commanders is coming to an end.
“We can only hope that every community we move to from now on is like the Shoals,” Ben said. “This area sets the bar for us. The rest of the nation could learn a lot from the Shoals, about caring and compassion.”

The Western Cape is spending millions trying to curb the scourge of “orchestrated land invasions”.
A parliamentary reply has revealed 1,025 invasions have taken place on land owned by the City of Cape Town since March last year, said Matlhodi Maseko, a member of the provincial parliament and DA Western Cape spokesperson on human settlements.
Measures to stop invasions cost the provincial department of human settlements nearly R116m in the 2020/2021 financial year and nearly R269m since the 2018/2019 financial year, said Maseko.

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WAFF) - State and local governments should begin receiving half of their allotted funds from the latest COVID-19 relief package by next month. Our news partners at the Times Daily report that the governments will start seeing funds by May 11. The $1.9 trillion relief package was enacted in March.

FLORENCE, Ala. (WAFF) - Florence is welcoming back a popular downtown event, First Fridayâs is starting June 4! The event will return after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
According to our news partners at the Times Daily, Stephanie Vess, Executive Director of Downtown Florence Alliance, said the events will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the first Fridays in June, July and August, and from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. from September through December.
