As cold winds sweep parts of Maharashtra, northern areas of the state along with Mumbai and Thane are likely to witness a drop in temperature January 25 onwards.

Before Monday, the highest minimum temperature for the month since 2010 (IMD has records from that year) was observed this January 2 as well. MUMBAI: The city woke up on Monday morning to its highest minimum temperature for January in at least a decade. The Indian Meteorological Department’s Santacruz observatory recorded a night temperature of 23 degree Celsius 5.7 degrees above normal. High temperature, during the day too, resulted in an improved air quality index (AQI) of 266 on Monday compared with over 300 in the past few days. An AQI of 266 is still considered poor though. Before Monday, the highest minimum temperature for the month since 2010 (IMD has records from that year) was observed this January 2 as well. The Santacruz observatory had recorded 22.7 degrees and Colaba 23.5 degrees, which was 4.1 degrees above normal.

The year has started on a rather polluted note for Mumbaikars and it hasn t gotten better even after the first week. According to AQI India, while Mumbai’s overall air quality index was 330, in the severe category, Delhi’s stood at 255. The national capital’s air quality was at the lower end of the poor category as forecast. Also, Mumbai’s AQI has been the worst this year. An AQI between 301 and 400 is considered very poor and triggers a health alert for everyone.
