Chennai, April 8 : Amid rising Covid-19 cases and some uncertainty over the safety of the bio-secure environment, the Indian Premier League s 14th edition gets underway here from Friday.
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians, looking for a hat-trick of titles, will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are yet to win an IPL title, in the first match of the tournament.
This is the second successive edition of the tournament that will be held behind closed doors after the one last year that was held in the UAE.

Days before the start of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), two ground staff members and one plumber have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Sources within the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Tuesday confirmed the development. It has also come to the fore that in order to conduct the IPL safely at the Wankhede, the groundstaff members would not be travelling and they will be staying in the stadium itself.

Due to the massive surge of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai and Maharashtra, the state government on Sunday announced “Break the Chain”, under which section 144 and night-curfew from 8pm to 7am on weekdays has been imposed on entire Maharashtra, including Mumbai.
