TOKYO (NDSU ATHLETICS) – Former North Dakota State NCAA champion Payton Otterdahl advanced to the shot put final at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Tuesday.
Otterdahl threw 68-7 (20.90m) on his last attempt of the qualifying round, which ultimately earned him the 12th and final spot in the event final.
The shot put final will be held at 9 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Aug. 4 – which is 11 a.m. Thursday morning in Tokyo. It will be streamed on NBCOlympics.com and on the NBC Sports app, as well as being part of the television broadcast on NBC/NBCSN Wednesday night.

Former North Dakota State men’s basketball standout Tyson Ward has signed a contract to play his second professional season in Germany.
Ward will be making the move to Telekom Baskets Bonn in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), Germany’s top division. He played his rookie season for Oliver Würzburg in the same league in 2020-21.
Ward averaged 9.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game as a rookie, scoring in double figures 14 times.
Ward played for NDSU from 2016-20, becoming the only player in school history with more than 1,500 points, 700 rebounds and 250 assists in his career. He was named to the Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America team, All-Summit League first team, All-Summit League Tournament team, and NABC All-District second team for his senior season in 2019-20.
