May farmgate price rise for hundreds of First Milk dairy farmers in Cumbria

Members will also receive their member premium on April 20. The owners of the Lake District Creamery at Aspatria has announced its member milk price will increase by 0.5ppl on a manufacturing basis from May 1. This takes the price to 29.43ppl. The change to reporting on a manufacturing standard litre is due to all members now being paid on manufacturing contracts. The dairy said the 4.2 per cent butterfat and 3.4 per cent protein also more accurately reflects the quality of milk members were producing. Members will also receive their member premium on April 20 for the milk they produced in 2020/21 milk year. For the average member this is just over £4,800.

Climate change matters to dairy consumers

EU money is available to improve dairy farm efficiency UK consumers are increasingly considering environmental impacts when choosing what food to buy. A recent survey conducted on behalf of dairy co-op First Milk has shown that three-quarters (76%) of consumers are concerned about climate change, with almost one-third (29%) taking environmental factors into account when choosing food. The survey, conducted in late March 2021, also found that a third of UK adults think that farming and the production of dairy foods significantly contributes to climate change, and almost half of them (46%) think rearing of animals for meat consumption has a negative impact on the problem.
