Pakistan, Afghanistan sign protocol for six-month extension in transit trade agreement 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday signed the Protocol-VI of Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA) 2010 to extend the agreement for six months beyond 11-05-2021.
The extension was essential to facilitate the uninterrupted flow of transit trade between the two countries and to provide sufficient time to technical teams to conclude negotiations on the new APTTA 2021.
Advisor to PM on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood and Afghan Minister for Industry and Commerce Nisar Ahmad Faizi Ghoryani chaired a virtual signing ceremony.
Secretary Commerce of Pakistan and Deputy Commerce Minister of Afghanistan also attended the ceremony.

Islamabad and Kabul signed the protocol for six-months extension of Afghanistan–Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement 2010 (APTTA) on Thursday.
Advisor to the PM on Commerce & Investment Abdul Razak Dawood and Nisar Ahmad Ghoriyani, Afghan Minister of Industry & Commerce, signed the documents through video link simultaneously at Kabul and Islamabad. Secretary Commerce was also present on occasion, while representatives of both embassies in respective capitals also attended the event.
Speaking on occasion, Dawood said that his vision for trade and economic relations with Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics (CARs) makes Pakistan a hub for trade, transit & transshipment . “Our trade must be based on secure, open, consistent, reliable & legal movement of goods at the Afghan border along with enhanced connectivity with Afghanistan & CARs”, he said.

Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood has said that Pakistan has the second-largest reserves of salt that can be the country’s main export product.
The advisor said this on Thursday while chairing a meeting to discuss issues related to salt industry and export enhancement plans. The meeting was participated by All Pakistan Salt Association (APSA) and senior officers of the Ministry of Commerce. In the deliberations, the president of the association thanked the advisor for receiving them. He was grateful that the Ministry of Commerce is taking a keen interest in export enhancement and supporting every sector and product with potential exports.

The extension was essential to facilitate uninterrupted flow of transit trade between the two countries and to provide sufficient time to technical teams to conclude negotiations on the new APTTA-2021, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
The 2010 agreement superseded the Afghanistan Transit Trade Agreement that was signed in 1965. The 1965 agreement granted Afghanistan the right to import duty-free goods through Pakistani seaports.
