The last few years it seems more and more manufacturers have come out with a halo car. Whether it’s a raw, mid-engined supercar or a super-luxe cruiser, its always nice to see these companies showing us what they’re capable of.
For those not familiar, a halo car is a model intended to showcase a manufacturer’s potential, not necessarily sell in droves, but improve the brand’s image and make the rest of the range more appealing. Some notable examples include the Audi R8, Lexus LFA, and Ford GT – not exactly brands associated with supercars.
Given all that, that brings us to our question: Which mainstream brand would you like to see make a halo car?
Hyundai and its sister companies in the Hyundai Motor Group, Kia and Genesis, have been making great strides as of recent in the design of their cars.
At the end of each year, the Good Design Awards showcase products that have, well, good design. And in 2020, Hyundai, Kia and Genesis have all made it onto that list.
Let’s take a look at how each brand did.
Hyundai
Hyundai won four awards with the Prophecy concept, the 45 concept, the Elantra/Avante, and the Hi-Charger EV charging infrastructure. The three cars, (Elantra/Avante, 45 and Prophecy) were all recognized for their unique design identities. While each design carries its own philosophy, all three were said to be reflective of a principle called “Sensuous Sportiness”. The Hi-Charger EV charging system also received the prize, adding to its plaudits from the 2020 Red Dot Awards.
