'Magnificent' community venue: Remodeled Dulles auditorium reopens in Watertown | Arts and Entertainment

They celebrated the opening of the more than $3.5 million remodeled auditorium during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The remodel was recently completed, just in time for the Disabled Persons Action Organization to host a ABBA tribute band performance, ABRA Cadabra, on Oct. 1. During Wednesday’s announcement, DPAO founder Joe Rich expressed his gratitude to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the Office of General Services for providing such a “magnificent auditorium” that his organization and others in the community can continue to use and enjoy. The newly renovated auditorium at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown opened Wednesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Kara Dry/Watertown Daily Times

Author's search for Harry Chapin's America included visit to Watertown | Arts and Entertainment

Author Pat Fenton went on the road to find the America that singer and songwriter Harry Chapin wrote about. “I have seen boarded-up movie houses, rusted railroad car diners, country churches, shuttered gas stations and crumbling factories on the edge of towns,” Mr. Fenton writes in the introduction to “Searching for Harry Chapin’s America: Remember When the Music,” published by Heliotrope Books. “I have passed by old country cemeteries on hills at the end of towns with quarter moons hanging over them, farmers herding cows across two-lane highways; I have driven past bowling alleys that some people still go to on Saturday nights for fun, all of it like sequences from a Sunday morning comic strip of the ’50s,” Mr. Fenton continues in the introduction.

Editorial — Expenses add up: Watertown must show it can afford to maintain another asset

On Tuesday, Watertown City Councilman Leonard G. Spaziani said he wanted more information about an amphitheater being proposed for Thompson Park. Council members voted to apply for up to $7.7 million through the Defense Community Infrastructure Program. Overseen by the U.S. Department of Defense, this initiative “is designed to address deficiencies in community infrastructure, supportive of a military installation, in order to enhance military value, installation resilience, and military family quality of life,” according to the program’s website. A city document outlining the projected expenses for the Thompson Park Performing Arts Center show the facility would cost $8,750,000 to construct. If Watertown obtained the grant from the federal government, it would need to contribute $1 million in soft costs (professional fees and consulting, project administration and construction inspection, equipment, administrative expenses and pre-construction services).
