A new study published in the journal of Critical Public Health challenges commonplace assumptions about suicidality in men. Recently, a popular explanation for an increase in suicide among men is their inability to talk about their problems. These mainstream understandings of male suicidality consider the barriers to vulnerability for men given the expectations of masculinity. However, Amy Chandler, a critical suicidologist at the University of Edinburgh, finds in her research that this discourse around masculinity and suicide may actually exacerbate these issues.

New Frontiers series continues with focus on communication

The New Frontiers in Biomedical Research will continue its COVID-19 series with the first lecture in the Spring Quarter. The seminar will focus on Health Communication during COVID-19 Pandemic at 3:30 p.m. CST Monday, March 29, on WebEx. Dr. Heidi Y. Lawrence, Associate Professor of English at George Mason University and Scott Barrows, Director of OSF Innovation Design Lab, Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center; Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria; and Clinical Assistant Professor in Biomedical Visualization at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center, will share their recent involvement in written and visual communication related to COVID-19 vaccine education.
