6 CAMP WILLIAMS, Utah - It was a morning of transitions as the Utah Army National Guard held a ceremony for the incoming and outgoing commanders of the Land Component Command on Tarbet Field at Camp Williams, Utah, May 1, 2021.
The Land Component Command is the headquarters for deployable Utah Army National Guard units and is responsible for overseeing the training and readiness of six major subordinate commands, comprised of approximately 4,400 Soldiers. The commander of the Land Component Command is accountable to the adjutant general to ensure these commands and their subordinate units are prepared to respond to any domestic or foreign contingency.
SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Army National Guard has promoted Col. Charlene Dalto to the position of brigadier general. Dalto becomes the first woman in the history of the Utah Army National Guard to reach the rank of a brigadier general.
At the change-of-command ceremony Saturday at Camp Williams, Dalto assumed the role of commander of the Utah Army National Guard Land Component Command from Brig. Gen. Thomas C. Fisher.
Dalto is a registered nurse for Intermountain Healthcare. According to a statement, she has commanded the Utah Army National Guard s Medical Detachment since February 2018.
She has served in the military for more than 38 years, first, as an enlisted soldier who rose to the rank of master sergeant. She then served for 18 years as an officer in the U.S. Army Nurse Corp.
Historic promotion: Utah National Guard will appoint first female brigadier general
Col. Charlene Dalto is expecting a big promotion on Saturday.
She ll become the first woman ever to rise to the rank of brigadier general in the Utah Army National Guard, and become commander of the Land Component Command.
Dalto has served in the military for more than 38 years. She s a registered nurse with Intermountain Healthcare who lives in Farmington.
After 20 years in the Army, Dalto was promoted to the rank of master sergeant before she was commissioned to the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, where she was an officer for 18 years. She deployed overseas to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in 1990.

Less than a year ago, Lehi resident Matt Gonzalez found himself in a “surreal” nightmare as a fast-moving wildfire approached homes along Traverse Mountain.
“It looked like the whole neighborhood was going to catch on fire at one time because, honestly, as close as our houses are if one house caught fire it would have been like a domino effect,” Gonzalez said.
The state experienced 1,547 wildfires in 2020, according to statistics provided by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, and the total cost to suppress those fires reached $60 million. And an ongoing drought impacting Utah is only increasing fire officials worries that 2021 will be worse.
Utah wildland firefighters getting ready for another busy season
CAMP WILLIAMS Wildfire season remains weeks away, but Utah s wildland firefighters are already prepping for what they expect to be another busy year. We had a decent year in regards to precipitation, but we haven t overcome the drought that we ve been in for a long-term period. I think that could come into play, and it definitely worries us, as well, as firefighters, said Matthew McFarland, Unified Fire Authority spokesman.
Capt. Jon Slatore, Unified fire management officer, noted that last year the state saw a high-than-average number of fires, though most weren t considered large in acreage.
