We begin this week with a cautionary tale titled “What community transmission looks like.” An event held in February to celebrate the opening of a bar in rural Illinois led to 46 cases of COVID-19, including 26 patrons of the bar, three bar employees, and 17 people who weren’t there at all but got infected by someone who was.

Four people who attended the event had COVID-19-like symptoms that day. One attendee was asymptomatic but had received a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 the day before the party.
Attendees reported inconsistent use of masks and failure to socially distance despite properly spaced tables and signs encouraging these precautions.

The U.S. government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority recently announced a competition for people to create a new face mask for the public, and the winner gets $500,000.
What is the government’s face mask challenge?
BARDA announced a new Mask Innovation Challenge in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a mask that can address some of the biggest issues with masks like masks fogging up glasses and face masks that make you feel uncomfortable.

Washington– Tired of using masks that fog up your glasses, irritate skin? Now you can design “the next generation of masks” that is low on cost, comfortable to wear and safe against Covid-19 pathogens, and also win $500,000.
The competition Mask Innovation Challenge has been announced by the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It is open only for participants from the US.
While public health agencies worldwide are encouraging people to wear masks to curb the spread of infectious Covid-19, prolonged wearing increases issues such as skin allergy, physical discomfort and difficulty in communicating.
