These erroneous stories aren’t flukes. Recent history shows repeatedly that corrupt media and politicians aren’t surprised or embarrassed when body cam footage or crucial details emerge that debunk their initial “reporting.”
That’s because they don’t so much report as create. They don’t get clicks and clout by uncovering and reporting what actually happened, but by feeding people and politicians’ pre-existing narratives. That’s why every lede and headline seems to be some variation of Black Lives Matter talking points.
Corrections, if issued at all, are usually stealthy and get buried instantly, and there’s no room for nuance on a protester’s poster board or in a presidential press release. Thus the narrative is set before any details emerge, and narratives are more powerful than facts in ginning up emotional responses and revolutions.

Michael Harriot is on assignment this week. Before he left, he asked someone to fill in for today’s mailbag but everyone on staff was really busy, so
The Root hired me as a one-time freelance writer to fill in. Honestly, I was surprised to get the call. After all of the insults and draggings I’ve received from writers here, I thought they hated me. Perhaps
The Root is trying to appear as if they are fair and balanced.

Anyway, I’ve never done this before so I thought I’d introduce myself before I do this mailbag thing. I’m much older than any of the writers here and I’m one of the few white contributors in the history of this site.

Some 3 miles from the White House, two teenage girls killed UberEats driver Mohammad Anwar while carjacking the Pakistani immigrant with a Taser just last month. Such a murder by children too young to drive legally would be shocking enough any time, but amid a visible uptick in violent crime against Asian Americans and especially senior citizens, Anwar s death was all the more shocking.
Neither President Joe Biden nor Vice President Kamala Harris made any mention of the matter, despite their previous lip service toward solidarity with Asian Americans. This choice seems all the more baffling given the killings they have chosen to weigh in on.

A plea bargain was being negotiated on Tuesday for two girls, ages 13 and 15, who were charged with murder after they allegedly carjacked a man in D.C. last month, used a stun gun against him and caused his car to flip.
The suspects, a 13-year-old from Southeast D.C. and a 15-year-old from Fort Washington, Maryland, may be charged with second-degree murder while armed in the death of Mohammad Anwar, attorneys said in court. Anward was 66 and lived in Springfield, Virginia. Download our NBC Washington app for iOS or Android to get alerts for local breaking news and weather.
