Updated: 6:05 PM EDT Jul 26, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff Edisto Beach State Park sea turtle patrol stumbled upon a rare find while performing a routine nest inventory, South Carolina State Parks shared on Facebook.Three to five days after a sea turtle nest shows signs of a major emergence, sea turtle patrol digs to count the hatched eggs and unhatched eggs. Sometimes, they find live hatchlings. On Wednesday, patrollers and volunteers found a two-headed loggerhead sea turtle hatchling, along with two other hatchlings.Officials said the two-headed hatching is the result of a genetic mutation. Other two-headed hatchlings have been found in South Carolina in the past, but this is a first for Edisto Beach State Park. All of the hatchlings were released into the ocean, officials said.
