Sask NDP calls for renewed eviction moratorium amid third COVID wave

Article content The Saskatchewan NDP is faulting the government for introducing legislation that could speed up evictions, as an Opposition critic calls for a moratorium to prevent renters from getting thrown on the street in the midst of a pandemic. The NDP’s housing and social services critic, Meara Conway, noted that a government bill intended to help victims of sexual violence get out of leases would also make it easier for landlords to give notice to end a tenancy for unpaid rent. Under current legislation, they must wait 15 days. If the bill passes as written, that would drop to a week. Conway called that “heartless.”

NDP Opposes Making it Easier to Evict Tenants

Justice Minister Gord Wyant says what they want to do is try to streamline the legislation as much as possible to give landlords an opportunity when it comes to notifying tenants, and to give tenants an opportunity to make sure they get all of their evidence in front of a hearing officer.

Proposed amendment to tenant legislation concerns Saskatchewan NDP

By Moises Canales Apr 15, 2021 6:37 AM Regina NDP MLA Meara Conway wants the Saskatchewan Party government to scrap a proposed change to The Residential Tenancies Act that she said would make it easier to evict tenants. The opposition party’s critic for social services said this is the opposite of what the government should be looking to do during a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, which she said should be to protect and keep people at home to limit transmission. Conway mentioned how she learned through conversations with organizations and community members that eviction numbers are steady in the province during the pandemic. She said it’s news that concerns her.
