In an unusual turn of events, Astra a Norwegian name meaning “star” is being reared by Suka, and Laerke a Danish name meaning “lark” is being reared by zoo staff after she required additional veterinary attention the day after her birth.

It happened on Monday, Feb. 8. According to Detroit Zoological Society Chief Life Sciences Officer Scott Carter, the two bears had lived together all of last year without any issues. This is the first killing of a Detroit Zoo animal by another animal since another polar bear died in 1988.

Anana, 20, was killed as Nuka, 16, attempted to breed, according to an evening news release from the Detroit Zoological Society. The bears had lived together without incident in 2020, Detroit Zoological Society Chief Life Sciences Officer Scott Carter said in the release.
