Masks will be required in the Minot Public Schools through May 26, but will be optional for the May 30 graduation ceremony and for students attending summer school.
The Minot Public School Board voted 5-0 to make the change on Friday after teachers, parents and students spoke at a public forum expressing opinions both for and against the masking policy.
Before the final vote, board member Miranda Schuler had made a motion calling for masks to be made optional in the school district after May 12. Board president Jim Rostad seconded the motion. Rostad said he has already had the COVID-19 virus and his doctor has told him he has immunity to the virus for up to nine months and possibly for life. Both were in favor of ending the mask requirement in the schools.

With COVID-19 cases way down, many area schools are planning for high school graduations that will look a lot closer to normal than they did last year at this time.
Minot High School principal Scott Faul said the Minot High School graduation on May 30 will still have limited capacity but there will be more people in the audience this year. The graduation will be held at the Minot State University Dome as is traditional, unlike last spring when graduation was held at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds with assigned seating allotted to the crowd – four guests per student – and students seated apart in the grandstand. This year each student will be able to invite eight guests. More tickets will likely be available via a lottery that will be drawn toward the end of May. Faul said some students have said they don’t plan to participate in the graduation ceremony this year, so more tickets could be avail

Kendo Carlson is the NDAESP Distinguished School Principal.
Washington Elementary principal Kendo Carlson, a former school counselor, said building relationships with students and their families is crucial for learning.
“That’s one of the keys,” said Carlson, who was named North Dakota Association of Elementary School Principals Distinguished Principal at a conference last month. He is one of 50 principals across the country who have been recognized for their outstanding performance. Mike Arlien, principal at Jim Hill Middle School, was recognized at the same conference as a Bell Ringer and John Hoeven Elementary Principal Joy Walker, who is retiring after this school year, was recognized for her years of service.
