Championing Research

IT is with great honour and humility I assume the role as Editor-in-Chief for Chemical Engineering Research and Design (ChERD), the official journal for the European Federation of Chemical Engineering: Part A and a publication of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. I would like to record my appreciation to our outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Eva Sorensen, for her leadership and service to ChERD over the last 11 years, and for her mentorship over the last couple of years in my role within ChERD as her deputy. Eva leaves ChERD in a very good position and very big shoes to fill. ChERD aims to be the principal international journal for publication of high quality, high impact, original research in the field of chemical engineering. Over the years, the journal has continued to evolve and grow, with original work published in the field as set out in the journal aims and scope encompassing the following core areas and topics: distillation and absorption; fluid flow; heat and mass tr

New Method Converts Methane in Natural Gas to Methanol at Room Temperature

When burned, natural gas the fuel used to heat homes, cook food and generate electricity produces carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the US consumed approximately 31 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2019, contributing roughly 1.6 gigatons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. A better way to use natural gas would be to convert it to methanol, a liquid fuel that burns more cleanly and can be used to produce gasoline and plastics. But converting the methane found in natural gas into methanol requires a lot of heat and pressure and generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide itself.

New Methane-to-Methanol Conversion Method Could Offer Cleaner Energy Source

New Methane-to-Methanol Conversion Method Could Offer Cleaner Energy Source Written by AZoMFeb 22 2021 Scientists from the University of Illinois Chicago have found a new method for conversion of methane in natural gas the fuel used to cook food, heat homes and produce electricity into liquid methanol at room temperature. Burning methane in natural gas contributes to carbon emissions, but methane converted to liquid methanol is a cleaner fuel. This breakthrough, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could probably offer a cleaner energy source for several daily activities of people.
