Subscriber only A Mackay man found himself in a hot mess after he could not explain to hospital staff how he suffered burns to 20 per cent of his body. Mackay Supreme Court heard on Thursday how Dieter Dean Stephens presented at Mackay Base Hospital s emergency department at 11am on August 21, 2019. The 23-year-old was taken to intensive care with face, eyes, neck, hands and feet injuries. Fortunately, your airways were not compromised, Justice Graeme Crow said. The court heard when Stephens could not explain the burns, hospital security alerted police. Police attended hospital and recognised you from CCTV footage obtained in the course of an investigation, Justice Crow said.

Defence solicitor Antoinette Morton, of Fisher Dore Lawyers, said her client had a difficult time in jail as he had been assaulted and even though he was not in protective custody, he was still receiving threats. To the point where he will not attend visits because he is not safe walking the gangway, Ms Morton said. He is unable to complete courses … due to the threats to his personal safety. Ms Morton said his criminal history was recent, beginning last year when he spiralled into drug addiction to cope with the death of his father in 2018. The court heard he had a good work history and a reference tendered to court confirmed he had a job to go to when released from custody.
