Recovery Group of Southern WV requests money from commission for repairs

LOGAN — Three members of the Recovery Group of Southern West Virginia approached the Logan County Commission during their regular session Monday to request funding for repairs to several facilities. The RGSWV operates two 24-hour recovery homes in the Logan area: the Marjorie Oakley Home for Women and the New Beginnings Home for Men. The programs offer a faith-based approach for individuals facing the drug recovery process. Tom Zamow, who serves on the board of directors for the RGSWV, said the Marjorie Oakley home, which is an older house built in the earlier half of the 20th century, is in need of several significant repairs in order to meet the certifications required for a facility providing such services. Zamow said the cost of renovating the structure is $80,000.

Dinner is served at Nighbert Memorial

LOGAN — Every Wednesday evening is community meal time at Nighbert Memorial United Methodist Church. The Wednesday meals are a project of Nighbert’s Outreach Ministry Team, led by Tom and Karen Bradshaw. Nighbert Memorial has been a part of downtown Logan for more than 100 years, and has served the community with this program for more than 10 years. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the dinners are currently being distributed outside on the church parking lot instead of being served in the church fellowship hall. Meals are served at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday. Members of the congregation, led by Janice Stone, prepare the food in Nighbert’s kitchen. The dinner normally includes a main dish, vegetables and a dessert. Recent menus featured meatloaf and vegetable beef soup.
