STOKE-ON-TRENT, United Kingdom - Canada got a pre-Olympic confidence boost Tuesday with a 2-0 win over England in a women s soccer friendly.
Evelyne Viens and Nichelle Prince capitalized on defensive miscues and Canada blunted the England attack the rest of the way for the victory. Canada did it without captain Christine Sinclair, who did not dress after limping off the field in the first half last Friday in a win over Wales.

Birmingham City Women arrived in London and attempted to frustrate the Blues by playing a very compact defense. They were able to hold Chelsea to a single goal in their prior meeting, and they may have believed they could even steal a point in London today.
That belief was however gone within the opening half hour, when Sam Kerr scored her first of three first half goals. Erin Cuthbert flashed some fancy footwork on the edge of the box before fizzing a shot that Birmingham keeper Hannah Hampton could only parry a few feet to her left. Despite being at a nearly impossible angle, Sam Kerr smashed the rebound inside the post to give Chelsea a deserved 1-0 lead.
Fran Kirby on song as Chelsea soar to season s first silverware
Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr led an incredible show of attacking power to blast Chelsea past Bristol City and lift the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup for the second time.
Emma Hayes’s side have been beaten once in 26 games in all competitions this season and that never looked like changing as Kerr netted a hat-trick and Kirby a brace at Vicarage Road.
The Blues, who won the last completed edition of the competition in 2019-20, will hope to sweep domestic silverware, in command as they are of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Chelsea overcame a few scares to eliminate Atletico Madrid from the UEFA Women’s Champions League Round of 16.
As in the 1st leg, there was more penalty dramas but a 1-1 result gave Emma Hayes’ side a 3-1 aggregate victory.
There were few threats on either goal in the first half but Ann-Katrin Berger needed a second attempt to smother Toni Duggan’s 20-yard volley, while Hedvig Lindahl’s outstretched boot prevented a cross going in off one of her own defenders.
Maren Mjelde should have made more when bursting through the defence on a counter-attack, while an earlier collision with Millie Bright offered the home side a chance, only for Dayna Catsellanos to clear the crossbar.
