Miller State Park’s auto road is scheduled to reopen on June 11, heralding the completion of a number of major improvements to the park.
The 1.3-mile paved road connecting Route 101 to the summit of Pack Monadnock is a popular walking spot for locals and visitors. Over the past three years, local park users have been working with the DNCR, Eversource, and other state interests to devise a beautification plan for the park, to deploy in tandem with necessary upgrades to the utility lines that extend up the mountain.
Work started in April. Eversource removed some existing poles along the road, buried lines underground at the summit, and rerouted their lines to a visually inconspicuous path through the woods. “All line construction was completed on May 20th and it is energized and in service,” an Eversource representative wrote on Monday. The Auto Road was able to open to the public on weekends before closing this week

Recommendations on where to go and what to do from our local experts, the Granite State Ambassadors

Spring is here and hope beckons. Maybe soon, maybe even now, we can begin to chip our way out of the shells we’ve been in since the beginning of the pandemic. Was it just a year ago? Seems like a generation, but all that time spent in our bubbles will just make it that much sweeter when we re-encounter and re-embrace the wondrous attractions of the Granite State.

Several local favorite hiking and swimming spots remain closed this winter, after towns shut them down as visitors – often from out of state – flooded in when quarantine hit, cluttering town roadways, leaving behind trash, and causing overcrowding.
State parks remain open, including popular hiking spots including Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey and Pack Monadnock in Peterborough. However, precautions to prevent overcrowding remain in place even now, in the off-season.
Monadnock State Park, which includes trail entrances to Mount Monadnock, has implemented a reservation system with a limited number of parking spots, a system put in place this summer due to demand. Those who do not make a reservation prior to their arrival can be turned away. The same system is in place at Miller State Park, at the foot of Pack Monadnock.
