Council candidates highlight issues facing city at forum

Council candidates highlight issues facing city at forum Exchange Club moderator Jerry Fortenberry leads a question-and-answer session with the five city council candidates who turned out for Thursday’s candidate forum Ward 4 challenger Marty Turner, Ward 4 incumbent Pierre Beard, Ward 3 candidate Rusty Greene, Ward 1 candidate Kallie Phillips and Ward 3 candidate Kori Bridges. Slim Smith/Dispatch Staff Put charitably, Thursday’s Columbus Exchange Club meeting/candidate forum was an example of brevity being the soul of wit. Candidates for city council races were given five minutes each to speak, which turned out to be more than enough time in every case as they spoke mostly in generalities about the issues facing the city and their plans to address them.

Our View: Is Ward 6 vote margin a referendum on direction of city?

Our View: Is Ward 6 vote margin a referendum on direction of city? Tuesday’s primary elections in Columbus provided one piece of the puzzle. Will city government remain largely status quo? Or will the June 8 general elections introduce sweeping changes and a course correction for the city? With only two incumbents Ward 2 councilman Joseph Mickens and Ward 5 councilman Stephen Jones unopposed and assured of their seats, three other council positions, along with the mayor’s race, will not be determined until June. In the meantime, the one council seat that did change hands Tuesday will likely be scrutinized like tea leaves in a fortune teller’s cup.

Former CFO of Mississippi city sentenced for embezzlement February 22, 2021 GMT COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) The former chief financial officer of a Mississippi city has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to embezzlement the maximum sentence for that crime. The Commercial Dispatch reported that Milton Rawle, 49, entered the guilty plea Monday in Lowndes County Circuit Court. Rawle worked for the city of Columbus from 2013 to 2019. Investigators said he moved $288,893 from city accounts to his personal accounts between December 2016 and December 2018. The maximum sentence for embezzlement of more than $25,000 is 20 years in prison. Circuit Judge Lee Coleman said he “couldn’t imagine” imposing less than the maximum, given the amount of public money Rawle admitted to taking. Because embezzlement is a nonviolent offense, Rawle will be eligible for parole consideration after five years.
