School board OKs compensation package

GARRETT — The Garrett-Keyser-Butler school board Monday approved a compensation package for administrative and non-certified employees for the next year. The measure includes 2% increases for administrative employees including the superintendent, high school and middle school principals and assistant principals, elementary principal and high school athletic director; a 1.5% increase for the elementary assistant principal; and a 6.76% hike for the Career Development Program director. Non-certified employees will see an estimated across-the-board 3% increase. A recommendation to increase daily pay for substitute teachers was also approved, from $75 to $85 for non-certified, from $80 to $85 for certified and from $85 to $90 for retired teachers. The increase will begin with the 2021-2022 school year.

Garrett renews contract with development partnership

GARRETT — At Tuesday’s meeting of the Garrett Board of Works, Executive Director Anton King of the DeKalb County Economic Development Partnership shared highlights from 2020 amid the pandemic, “which oddly was a record-breaking year from a dollar-investment standpoint,” he said. “What we saw was it was a time to hit the pause button, with companies realizing where to make their dollar investments strategically. DeKalb County was the benefactor of several consolidations,” he said, reporting some $145 million in investments in the county as a whole, a total 43 deals altogether, not only in manufacturing and distribution sector, but also a great deal of commercial activity, commercial expansions and quality-of-life projects, such as Momentive Performance Materials and the expansion of Shorty’s Steakhouse, both in Garrett.

Donors make historic marker possible

To the editor: I would like to thank the following donors who have made DeKalb County s next official state historic marker possible: Sandra Arvin, Mayor Todd Fiandt and wife Victoria, City Planner Milton Otero and wife Tracy, Kent and Shelley Johnson. This latest endeavor has been delayed for the past year due to the pandemic, but as of last week, the funds needed to send the bronze marker into production were sent to Indianapolis. This official interpretative panel will honor the life and work of stage and screen star John Bowersox, who went by the stage name John Bowers. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, His career on stage and film started while growing up in Garrett, and he would go on to become one of the most famed actors of his time.
