You were probably 16, a bit nervous, on the first visit. Not when it was Broms Academy of Hairdressing. And not when it was the Royal Hotel. Your trip to this part of Main Street in Worcester, at the corner of Myrtle Street, marked the beginning of your driving years. The state Registry of Motor Vehicles has filled this spot for about three decades. The parcel was in the news this week when the RMV announced it planned to give up the spot and move to the former Big Y supermarket on Southwest Cutoff. Broms Academy, pictured in our Then photo, was located at 621-625 Main St. for about 15 years, moving there in November 1971 after an extensive remodeling project.

Monday, April 19 At 8:28 a.m., the Echo Hose H & L Co. No. 1 and the White Hills Co. No. 5 responded with a rescue truck to the Perry Hill School, 60 Perry Hill Road, for an odor of natural gas in the building. No presence of gas was found by firefighters. At 3:21 p.m., the Echo Hose H & L Co. No. 1 and the Pine Rock Park Co. No. 4 responded with an engine and a ladder truck to a Myrtle Street address for an odor of natural gas in the building.

Updated April 28 Absentee ballot voting for Portland’s June 8 special election to begin next month City residents can request absentee ballots and soon will able to vote on whether to approve the school budget and who should get to serve on a new Charter Commission. Share Portland residents can now request an absentee ballot for the city’s special election on June 8 and the ballots will be available early next month. Jessica Grondin, the city’s spokesperson, said city residents will vote on June 8 on the proposed school budget for 2021-22 and to elect nine members to the Charter Commission.

East Landis Avenue drivers craving some paving, it s on the way On Thursday evening, crews are scheduled to start milling the road surface to prepare it for paving. “It will be night paving and night milling,” said Charles Marandino, the project’s general contractor. Crews will be at work between about 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Since the project launched in October, Landis Avenue has largely remained open, although limited at times to one-lane traffic. During this paving phase, the avenue will be closed to through traffic so drivers should prepare for detours. When South State Inc. wraps up the paving, line striping and new signage will be added.
