There were 51 cinema halls in Tangail in the 1990s. But only five managed to survive while 46 could not due to lack of audience.
The owners still think it is possible to keep the business alive if movies with engaging stories and good production value are made and digitized cinema halls can be built with government assistance.
The cinema hall business in Tangail started with Raushan Talkies built at a secluded corner of the then small municipal town in 1950 by Lebu Chawdhury.

The traditional weaving industry in Tangail district needs both public and private support in order to recover from the Covid-19 and flood-induced losses, according to local traders. Few buyers for the famous Tangail sari are turning up ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, said trader Mirza Shakil. This has left local sari weavers and traders frustrated with their unsold stocks, he added.
During a recent visit to sari markets in Sadar upazila and Kalihati upazila, it was seen that sales were less than 15 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Traditional shital pati makers in Tangail are on the verge of extinction due to increasing cost of raw materials and drastic fall in demand.
Besides, a lack of marketing facilities, government support and easy access to finance have only deepened their woes in the face of fresh lockdowns to curb the spread of Covid-19.
