The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited on Monday rolled out an anti-vandalism campaign for the Southern Region.
The official launch of the month-long campaign took place at Chirimba Primary School Ground in Blantyre where representatives of the police and the community leaders graced the occasion.
In his speech marking the launch, ESCOM District Engineer (Limbe), Eston Macheche, said vandalism was affecting the corporation’s service delivery.
He added: “We urge all of you to take a leading role in safeguarding the property of ESCOM by reporting to the authorities those found vandalising ESCOM property.”
Protecting the property of ESCOM is our collective responsibility because if such property is vandalised, entire communities are affected,” he said.
“We have in the pipeline a plan to increase electricity generation and supply in the country in the short to medium term.”
Spurred by incessant intermittent power-cuts and sporadic black-outs, Malawi Government is geared to increase energy generation capacity in the country in an ambitious and mind-blowing plan and has embarked on working towards adding a staggering 1,000 megawatts of electricity to the national grid within the next four years, President Lazarus Chakwera has announced.
President Chakwera made the remarks, which is sweet music to all Malawians who for so long have suffered a continued stroke of bad electricity management systems on Wednesday in Parliament when he was answering questions to Members of Parliament.

The ruling is in relation to the case in which former ESCOM board member Dr. Jean Chifundo Mathanga, Chief Executive Officer John Kandulu, […]
The High Court in Blantyre has dismissed an application by former Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) board chairperson, Jean Mathaga and three others, who asked the court to stop hearing the charges they are facing.
Mathanga, former ESCOM CEO John Kandulu, Fanuel Nkhono and Emilius Kandapo are answering multiple offences under the Penal Code and the Corrupt Practices Act, which include neglecting of official duties and abuse of public office.
The four raised preliminary objections against the hearing, saying they cannot face the charges in question, arguing ESCOM is not a public body and they too are not public officers.
