Mchinji First Magistrate Court has convicted a bar owner and condemned him with a suspended sentence of 12 months for assaulting an Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi ESCOM employee on May 20Â 2019.
Central âWest Region Police Relations Officer, Alfred Chimthere said First Grade Magistrate Yohane Nkhata slapped Paul Tembo with a 16 month sentence but suspended it to 12 months for assaulting the ESCOM employee, Moses Mwandira.
Tembo aged 40 attacked Mwandira to prevent him from uncovering an illegal connection at a bar located at Kanyama in Mchinji District,
ââThe accused illegally connected electricity from his house to his bar. When ESCOM officials asked he assaulted him .He pleaded guilty to the charge lenient sentence,ââ Chimthere said.

“The accused illegally connected electricity from his house to his bar. When Escom officials asked, he assaulted him. He pleaded guilty to the charge; hence, lenient sentence,” Chimthere said.
“Investigations are still underway.”
Balaka Magistrates Court has sentenced Dickson Chipoya to two years in jail for attempted theft of an Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited transformer stationed at Khwisa Trading Centre in the district on February 3 2021.
Balaka Police spokesperson, Felix Misomali, said the court handed a 24 months sentence on Chipoya for malicious damage and 12 months for attempted theft last week.
The sentences will run concurrently.

Chipoya hails originally from Chinamwali in Zomba.
He said the court acquitted another suspect, who was answering similar charges, whereas the case for another one, Madalitso Gama, a faults operator for ESCOM, is pending at the same court.

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited has awarded scholarships worth K10 million to 25 outstanding female electrical engineering students from the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and The Malawi Polytechnic.
The handover ceremony of the scholarships to 16 students from MUST and nine from The Polytechnic took place at Escom Mpemba Training Centre in Blantyre on Tuesday, 27th April 2021.
MUST received K6,100, 000 whereas The Poly got K4,050,000 to cater for the students fees. Eventually, the schools and Escom officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cement their relationship.
Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) to reverse decision on tariffs hike, describing it as illegal.
The call follows revelation that ESCOM hiked the tariffs without any approval from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA).
In the statement CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa described the news as as it is illegal for ESCOM to make unilateral decisions.
“We are, therefore, inclined to believe that the Tonse Alliance Government is remotely controlling MERA to push the blame on ESCOM, following a backlash from the public over exorbitant charges, tariffs and levies on essential services and products such as water, electricity, fuel, cooking oil, etc.
