Decade of Difference: The Raconteurs

The Raconteurs came together in Nashville when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song. Steady as She Goes was good enough that they put together a band around it, and the Raconteurs were born. Since Jack White’s White Stripes were still active, the Raconteurs recorded around their schedule and Bensons’ home studio releasing their first single and album in 2006. A second Raconteurs album came in 2008 and both reached the top 10 in the US while also charting very well in Europe and Australia. The band toured, playing many major music festivals before going dormant in 2010. There would be occasional one off performances from the band, but no more records for a decade.

The story of BLK JKS (pronounced Black Jacks) reads like a real life rock’n’roll legend. For a couple of years around the end of the 00’s, the enigmatic South African rock quartet was ascendant. “Discovered” by Diplo, they went on to befriend everyone from The Mars Volta to TV On The Radio. They played double bills with Squarepusher at South Bank (UK) and Femi Kuti at Irving Plaza (NYC). They recorded an EP named Mystery at Jimi Hendrix’s iconic Electric Lady Studios. This and a Fader Magazine cover feature led to the band signing with Secretly Canadian in 2009.
