Prime Minster John Briceño also spoke out today, courtesy of the Government Press Office, on the ongoing negotiations between the unions and G.O.B. representatives. PM Briceño, who is not in the negotiation room with the unions, says he does get updates on what transpires in those meetings. He expressed disappointment with what he deems to be “wavering commitments” from the unions. He also spoke about the government’s responsibility to ensure that the country continues to function during strike actions.

Head of State Tenders Resignation
The Governor General of Belize Sir Colville Young tendered his resignation on April fourth. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the Governor General noted that he is resigning in keeping with a request made by the Prime Minster on March fifteenth, 2021. He noted that the PM should not hesitate to call on him for further service during retirement. The recent death of Sir Colville Young’s predecessor, Dame Minita Gordon brought to light the maltreatment she received after she demitted office. PM Briceño says he will seek to ensure changes for future G.G.s.

Inaugural Opening of the 13th National Assembly
The first meeting of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Prime Minister John Briceño was an outdoor affair in Belmopan this morning. A host of dignitaries and other invited guests were socially distant under a large tent where they sat and witnessed the administering of the oath of office, as well as remarks delivered by the Governor General and the new Head of Government. At the ceremonial sitting, two new women parliamentarians were introduced as President of the Senate and Speaker of the House, respectively. News Five’s Isani Cayetano was in attendance and has the following story.
