Myon Burrell enjoys 1st days of freedom

For nearly two decades, Myon Burrell had nothing but time. Locked up for life at 16 for a high-profile murder he swore he had nothing to do with, he was stuck in a tiny cell without even a window to watch the seasons change. The years dragged on slowly, and he saw the bodies of once-robust men age and decay. Still, he couldn’t help wishing that the outside world would slow down. In the Stillwater prison visiting room and in family photographs, his own son seemed to grow overnight from toddler to teen to man. With no opportunity for real goodbyes, men in his unit rattled their bars or reached out their hands, wishing him well as he passed. Within hours, he walked out the prison’s front door into the frigid air, relatives and supporters swarming around him and chanting “Myon’s free! Myon’s free!”

Minnesota Releases Myon Burrell Who Received A Life Sentence At Age 16

By Cherranda Smith After spending 18 years in prison, Myon Burrell was released on Tuesday (December 15). He was greeted by family and advocates outside of the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater in Bayport, Minnesota.  In 2002, at age 16, Burrell received a life sentence following the death of Tyesha Edwards, an 11-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet.  The Minnesota Board of Pardons commuted his life sentence, reducing it to 20 years. Burrell, now 34 years old, will spend the remaining two years on supervised release, according to His case sparked outrage from criminal justice reform advocates and was a point of contention in Senator Amy Klobuchar’s presidential run. Klobuchar was the Hennepin County attorney at the time of Burrell’s conviction and led the office. Her “tough on crime” campaign message was criticized in light of her involvement in Burrell’s case following further investigation.
