AAUW names Cobb as gift honoree

AAUW names Copp as gift honoree Dec. 20, 2020 FacebookTwitterEmail The American Association of University Women (AAUW) – Midland Branch, recognized Ruth Copp as this year’s Named Gift Honoree at its Dec. 10 meeting. The Named Gift Honoree award is presented yearly to a member for outstanding service to the branch and community. The AAUW Branch will contribute $1,000 in her name to a local scholarship fund. Copp received her bachelor’s degree from Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota, and her master of arts in teaching from Saginaw Valley University. She moved to Midland with her husband John and two sons, Dan and Dave, in 1986.

As 2020 comes to a close, we take time to remember these notable individuals. Longtime volunteer Rhea Currie, 103, died March 13. Born in Peck, Michigan, Currie graduated from Alma College and taught in Midland Public Schools. She helped in many capacities at Midland Hospital (now known as MidMichigan Medical Center) from its opening in 1944 to 2019, making her the hospital’s oldest and longest-tenured volunteer; she received a certificate of recognition from the governor’s office for her efforts. Currie worked in the gift shop, at the front desk, in the surgical lounge and as an escort, considering the hospital her home away from home.

Dow High, Midland High F2F students to remain virtual through Jan. 14 Dow, Midland F2F students to return to in-school learning Jan. 19 Daily News staff FacebookTwitterEmail H.H. Dow High School and Midland High School face-to-face (F2F) students will remain  in remote learning through the end of the first semester, which is Thursday, Jan. 14, Midland Public Schools Superintendent Michael Sharrow announced in an email communique to MPS stakeholders late Friday afternoon. Dow High and Midland High F2F students will then return to in-school learning on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the first day of the second semester. Sharrow s message came about two hours after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer had announced that high school students throughout the state would be allowed to return to in-school learning on Monday, Dec. 21, at the discretion of local school districts.

Sarah Lew Link Grimes

1932-2020 Sarah Lew Link Grimes of Midland, Texas passed away Thursday evening Dec. 3, 2020 at home surrounded by those that loved her most. Sarah Lew’s birth in Midland on June 12, 1932 to Lewis Charles Link and Sarah Ann Binney Link completed the family. Frances Ellen Link became a big sister to “Sata.” 1411 West Texas Street was home. Sarah Lew attended Midland public schools, graduating from Midland High School in 1949. While a Bulldog, Sarah Lew was active in student affairs, served as drum major for the pep squad and was photographed marching down Main Street leading the pack. In support of the WWII effort, Sarah Lew traveled the area promoting and selling War Bonds. She made some of her lifelong friends while in Midland schools.
