Ex-WWJ reporter Vickie Thomas to join Detroit Mayor Duggan s office

View Comments Retiring WWJ-AM (950) AM reporter Vickie Thomas said she s going to work for Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. After spending more than 30 years at the news radio station, the longtime, award-winning reporter announced her retirement on April 16. She said her last day at the station is Thursday. I am happy to announce that I will be joining Mayor Mike Duggan s administration as an executive assistant to the mayor and as the new director of communications for the city, Thomas said on the air. It s really a role that I m excited about. She is scheduled to start the new job next month.

WWJ reporter Vickie Thomas reflects on 30 years on Detroit airwaves

When Vickie Thomas announced last week that she was retiring from WWJ-AM (950) after 30 years, accolades began arriving from listeners, major players in politics and her competitors at Detroit s media outlets. The Wayne County Commission declared April 22 as Vickie Thomas Day. The commission’s chair, Alisha Bell, describe the city beat reporter as “a broadcasting legend whose work has touched so many lives through her work and commitment to the community.” Thursday is her final day at the all-news station (although she will continue to do her weekly Black Business Minute segment for WWJ). She ll be on the air starting around 7:30 a.m., and she plans to share details then on what comes next for her.

The longtime Grand Rapids Griffins radio broadcaster said he was nine or 10 years old, and his neighbor’s father was playing for the old Jacksonville Rockets of the Eastern Hockey League. He joined his friend at a Jacksonville game on Halloween night, and he recalled that there was a bench-clearing brawl. “From that point on, I fell in love with it,” said Kaser, who has been working in hockey for 41 years. “I used to go down to the rink with my neighbor and watch his dad practice. It was like yesterday. It was pretty warm in Jacksonville, and we would go into the rink and it would feel pretty good.

WWJ reporter Vickie Thomas announces retirement The Detroit News Award-winning longtime WWJ Newsradio 950-AM reporter Vickie Thomas is retiring this month, she announced Friday on Twitter. It s been an amazing ride working with the outstanding professionals at WWJ . the BEST news team around! the broadcaster tweeted. I ve truly been blessed!! Thomas, the city beat reporter at WWJ, said her last day on air is April 29 but she plans to continue a weekly podcast, Black Business Minute. The Metro Detroit native joined the station in 1991. During her career she earned honors from groups including the Detroit Press Foundation, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Michigan Associated Press and the National Association of Black Journalists, according to the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, into which she was inducted in 2019.
