Lake Superior State University Preparing Students for the Michigan Cannabis Industry

9 & 10 News July 14, 2021 Students in Northern Michigan are learning the cannabis industry as it keeps growing across the state. Noah Yates, a student at Lake Superior State University, has two more semesters before he’ll earn a bachelor’s degree in cannabis chemistry, one of the first programs in the country to focus on analyzing cannabis related compounds. “A lot of our coursework is a lot of chemistry, organic chemistry, general chemistry,” he said. “A lot of it would be on the analytical side of chemistry.” Yates is now getting first hand experience in the field with an internship at Cannalicious Labs, a company that takes the biomass out of the plant and creates concentrated products. “It’s bringing cannabis out of the prohibition days, the black market days, and I say this a lot, especially to my staff, but we’re making history here,” said Devin DeFord, executive vice president of Cannalicious Labs.
