Subsidized internet program bridges digital divide

A new federal program will provide low-income residents with a monthly subsidy to help pay for internet service. The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program will provide a monthly subsidy of up to $50 to eligible residents to pay for internet services, and up to $75 for households on Native American territories. “In today’s society and especially in the wake of the pandemic, it’s clear that internet access is no longer a luxury any longer,” said Congressman Joe Morelle, who supported the program which was passed by lawmakers in December as part of a COVID-19 relief package. “It’s a necessity required to participate in the activities of daily living.”

City Council votes to urge city administration to fire Prude officers

Daniel Prude s brother, Joe Prude, outside City Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020, to announce plans to sue the city over Prude s death. The Rochester City Council has passed a resolution urging the city administration and Rochester Police Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan to consider firing the officers involved in Daniel Prude s death. The resolution, approved by an eight-to-one vote Tuesday evening, states that though Attorney General Letitia James s grand jury investigation declined to pursue criminal charges, the officers are still liable for discipline. While an internal investigation did begin following Prude s death, it has yet to conclude, and was effectively paused as the city awaited the findings of the criminal investigation, the resolution states.

Group of Rochester Activists Running for Seats on City Council

Feb 2, 2021 Four progressive activists who ve organized and participated in recent protests against police and politicians in Rochester are teaming up to run for seats on the City Council. Stanley Martin, Kim Smith, Brittan Hardgers and Kevin Stewart call themselves The People s Slate . The five at-large Council seats are at stake this year. Three incumbents are expected to run for new terms Mitch Gruber, Willie Lightfoot, and Miguel Meléndez. Smith lost a Democratic state senate primary last year and tried unsuccessfully to fill a city council vacancy. Martin ran unsuccessfully for City Council’s East District seat in 2019.
