MASSENA â The Massena Central School Districtâs âPriorities and Strategiesâ for 2020 to 2023 are a little smaller than in the past, thanks to COVID-19.
A district committee of about 30 stakeholders, including parents, students, staff and administrators have met each year since 2016 to look at the districtâs strategic plan and the metrics used for evaluation and make changes to it.
Meanwhile, district-level committees also meet with Prism Systems, the consultant used for drawing up the plan.
âStudents are our first priority, and our decisions are made in regard to whatâs in the best interest of students. We have metrics such as graduation rates, state test scores, chronic absenteeism and several others,â Superintendent Patrick Brady said.

MASSENA – Contractors working on the Massena Central School District’s capital project will conduct a building condition survey of all district buildings, which the state requires every five years.
Contractor Ed Bernhauer from the IBI group discussed the proposal with the Board of Education during their Thursday, Dec. 17 meeting.
“What it involves is you have your architects and engineers go out and survey the conditions of your educational occupied buildings,” Bernhauer said.
The survey will be the district’s blueprint for capital projects over the next five years.
“[It] plans out what you’re looking at for future capital projects, and what is the cost of those projects . what is the physical need in the buildings and what is the cost associated with it,” he said.

MASSENA – The Massena Central School District is looking at “a tough budget year” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Loren Fountaine, who chairs the Board of Education’s Finance Committee, gave his perspective during the full board’s Thursday, Dec. 17 meeting.
“I think we all know we’re in for a tough budget year, probably for the next three years, minimum,” he said.
Shortfalls in tax revenue at the state level have left Massena’s town and village boards preparing for a 20% cut in state aid. Both made mid-year cuts to their budgets in anticipation of the cuts, and the town had a difficult time last month crafting their 2021 budget. It slightly raised taxes and the tax rate. School districts could be looking at a similar situation.
