Maldives welcomes 100,000th tourist since reopening

The year 2019 was a remarkable one in the history of the Maldives’ tourism, with a ground-breaking record of 1.7 million tourist arrivals to the country. 2020 started off with more diversified and aggressive marketing strategies to break this record and reach a target of 2 million tourist arrivals by the end of the year.
However, due to the ongoing global pandemic, the Maldives had to close its borders on 27 March 2020. After almost four months of border closure, the tourism industry reopened on 15 July, with enhanced precautionary measures against COVID-19. A safe tourism guideline was issued by the Ministry of Tourism. Resorts and Liveaboards resumed operations on this date, whereas guesthouses resumed operations on 15 October. As of 14 December, guesthouses and hotels in the greater Male’ region are also scheduled to reopen.
Who Can Travel to Maldives Right Now?
From 15th July 2020, Maldives reopened its borders following a previous restriction on all but non-essential travel. Currently, tourists of
all nationalities are permitted to travel to the Maldives, with no restrictions.
Major countries include Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, for example.
Note that entry to Maldives’ borders from overseas by boat, yacht or any other seafaring passenger vessel is
restricted indefinitely. Only air travel is permitted.
Can Americans travel to Maldives?
Currently, American tourists are permitted to travel to Maldives.
Along with individuals from all other countries, provided they follow the entry requirements in place for safe travel, U.S. citizens may currently visit the Maldives for any purpose, including for tourism reasons.

While the country welcomed 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2019, it is expected meet its target of 500,000 tourist arrivals for this year by December 25

Maldives on Saturday welcomed the 100,000th visitor since border reopening.
While the country’s borders were closed on March 27 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were reopened on July 15.
The 100,000th visitor arrived in the island nation on Saturday morning, and was given a grand welcome by the Ministry of Tourism, together with Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Immigration and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

Maldives, on Saturday, welcomed its 100,000th tourist following the reopening of the country s border on July 15.
The Ministry of Tourism, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Immigration and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) identified Jasmin Burki, as the 100,000th tourist and held a celebratory event at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The tourist was escorted by officials of MMPRC and Maldives Immigration, following her arrival from Switzerland via Emirates and greeted by the Deputy Tourism Minister, the MMPRC Managing Director and the Controller General of Immigration as well as MACL s CEO and Managing Director.
