HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. â On Monday, Hillsborough County School District leaders announced a promising light at the end of the tunnel of ongoing financial issues.
Superintendent Addison Davis said the state is releasing $101M of CARES ACT 2 funding (ESSER funds) to the district, allowing them to maintain a balance of 3 percent and avoid a state takeover of the district s finances.
The Hillsborough County School District is the third-largest school system in the state and the eighth largest in the country. Yet, sweeping financial issues now have district leaders cutting teaching positions and considering closing under-enrolled schools. Hundreds of families are now left wondering if their kids will have the services they need. Florida received its portion of the federal relief money in late March, and is supposed to disburse it within 60 days.
Florida is getting more than $7 billion for K-12 schools as part of a massive aid package called the American Rescue Plan, which President Joe Biden signed in March.
But Tampa Congresswoman Kathy Castor said in an online town hall Wednesday, the state hasn t released the money to any Florida school districts. And they have been slow walking the funds down to local school districts. They ve (been) slow walking it to an extent that I had to write a letter to the governor to say release our funds. We need them in Hillsborough County, Castor said.
