“I love it,” said tribal member Kylie Torres. “Because usually, especially when it’s warm, you have random people from God knows where here, and they’ll ride their quads and their RZRs, and they’re just reckless.”
The reservoir is the most popular recreational attraction on the reservation, but it’s been off-limits to the general public since last year. Tribes across the Mountain West chose to close their land early on in the pandemic, including the Walker River Paiute Tribe.
Officials here say that helped keep COVID-19 at bay. But there was an unexpected benefit, too: Closing the reservation has meant tribal citizens have Weber Reservoir to themselves.
A new survey suggests that some unvaccinated people may not comply with guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to continue wearing masks indoors. Most states in our region trail the national rate of people who are fully vaccinated.
Recently, the CDC announced new mask wearing guidelines: People who are fully vaccinated against the virus can remove their masks in most indoor and outdoor places.
Matt Motta is an assistant professor of political science at Oklahoma State. He said this is causing some trust issues between people.
“There was some concern that people who are not vaccinated or who are only partially vaccinated might choose not to wear a mask anyway,” he said.

There are currently no large wildfires burning in Utah. The state has initiated a few prescribed burns.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning from Wednesday morning, May 19 through Thursday night, May 20 in southwest Utah. A fire weather watch will also be in effect all day Friday, May 21. The warning is because of forecasted dry, windy conditions. Any fires that are started could spread quickly, outdoor fires are not recommended.
