MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) Free and fresh produce is available at a new food pantry in Marshalltown.
Provided by the Marshall County Master Gardeners Club, the pantry is filled with produce from the club’s gardens around Marshalltown with plans to keep the box well-stocked throughout the growing season. Plus, the pantry contains growing materials and seed packets for people to grow their own produce.
The pantry is also open for donations, so anyone with extra produce from their garden or wants to give dry goods can bring them to the pantry at 2608 S. Second St.
The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown would be required to allow all its residents to smoke, despite risking federal funding, according to a state Senate study bill passed this week by a legislative subcommittee.
The Veterans Home, one of the largest such facilities in the country, provides care and housing for up to 550 veterans. There are 412 residents there now.
Home administrators allowed 41 residents who started living there before the ban to continue to smoke in a designated area with supervision. The problem is, newer residents don’t think it’s fair they can’t smoke, too, despite having signed a pledge to adhere to the no-smoking policy.

DES MOINES – In a letter sent to House Republican Leaders, Iowa House Minority Leader Todd Prichard has called on Speaker Pat Grassley to remove State Rep. Dean Fisher of Tama County from his role as Chair of the House Environmental Protection Committee and be stripped of his committee assignments. Prichard’s insistence follows a series of false and threatening social media posts made by Fisher following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
“A week ago, I requested that Rep. Fisher issue a public apology, accept responsibility for false social media posts, denounce the violence he condoned in his comments, and immediately stop spreading lies and conspiracy theories about the legitimacy of our elections,” said Prichard. “Since he refuses to tell the truth and condemn violence, Rep. Fisher must be held accountable for his actions. He should immediately be removed as Chair of the House Environmental Protection Committee and stripped of his committee assignmen
