Allegheny County reports surge of COVID-19 cases

In Allegheny County, some people are back in a mask or at least have one nearby. On Wednesday, the Allegheny County Health Department revealed that there’s a late-summer surge of COVID-19 cases due to the delta variant. Health Director Dr. Debra Bogen said they are seeing more than 100 cases a day. “I think we should still be wearing our masks just because of the delta variant,” said Marla Harvey. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates more than two-thirds of cases in our region are the delta variant. The CDC recommends mask wearing indoors for unvaccinated and vaccinated people living in areas with high transmission. Allegheny County just moved to the substantial level of community transmission. The county does not plan on putting a mask mandate in place. “The Health Department and Dr. Bogen and her team are continuing to look at data,” said County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “At this point, we are recommending to follow the CDC guidelines.” The c
