To the editor: You, the Republican Party, have reached a pivotal point in your history. You need to decide what’s going to be your future image and direction. You have become the party that uses fear-mongering and name-calling to attract members. You prey on people in rural areas who don’t want the complexion of their communities to change, and you tell them that immigrants, Blacks, Muslims and gays are going to ruin everything. You turn neighbor against neighbor by hyping Democrats as socialists and liberals while you reject constitutional efforts to grant freedom and justice for people of every race, religion and culture.

Monday, February 1, 2021 - 6:33 am In response to “Opinion: Stefanik fights for values, military, Constitutional rights, says Hammond man”: After reading the letter, I understand why 5,000 National Guardsmen will remain in Washington, DC, why the DHS has issued a domestic terrorism advisory and why we need the impeachment trial to expose all of the behind-the-scenes instigators involved in fueling the plan of assault on the Capitol. Unfortunately, some people get worked up and take the idea of rebelling literally. You can hear the rhetoric in the letter repeating the word “fight” 8 times and saying, “we will re-group and recruit even larger numbers”; as if we’re at war. Interestingly, the letter includes labels and catch phrases circulated on websites now being monitored for domestic terrorism by the FBI. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 - 7:35 am To the Editor: People are getting upset over things that aren’t even happening. Shouldn’t the sources that mislead people be held accountable? The author of “Opinion: Pelosi Seeks to Verbally Neuter Our Language” got angry based on what she heard. The Fox headline, “Gender Terms Banned Under New House Rules”, was circulated on Facebook and Instagram. Republican Kevin McCarthy tweeted that the Democrats “won’t let you say gendered words like father and mother”. Those are distortions of a simple fact. Some words in the written House Rules were replaced by more generic ones. No one is banning gender words in speech or writing. But headlines designed to rile people up, followed by a flurry of social media posts and reposts have everyone in a tizzy. (That’s how the lie that we can’t say Merry Christmas got started.)
