Hamburg artist Martha Ressler mounted her solo art exhibition Berks in Stitches at Art Plus Gallery in West Reading for the month of December. Berks in Stitches consists of 87 small, framed quilts. Ressler spent a year and a half visiting all of the townships and boroughs in Berks County and then created a small art quilt in response.
âThe thread starts in Pittsburgh in 2013. That was when I visited an exhibit by artist friend Ron Donoughe. In â90 Neighborhoodsâ he sought to capture the unique character of each neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 90 plein air paintings. The idea of visiting places stuck with me,â said Ressler.
Fiber artist Martha Ressler has taken wool felt, vintage mementos such as postcards, pins, buttons, tour book snippets, matchbooks and other found objects and sewn them into miniature quilts embellished with hand stitching that depict life in Berks County s 72 municipalities.
She has put together 87 framed art quilts using a raw-edge applique style to create the Berks in Stitches on display at Art Plus Gallery in West Reading through Dec. 30.
She was inspired to undertake such a project after viewing a 2013 exhibit in Pittsburgh by artist and friend Ron Donoughe called 90 Neighborhoods. He used 90 plein air paintings to tell the story of Pittsburgh neighborhoods, which is where Ressler lived at the time.Â
It has been since March, the last time the Bach Choir of Bethlehem sang together, but in October, the choir s 65 members got together for the first time in more than six months at Little Pond Arts in Moore Township, Northampton County, where the group â socially distanced and outdoors - recorded music for its first-ever virtual Christmas concert.
The choir s concert, Opening Up Our Hearts: The Music and Inspiration of Christmas, will premiere online at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The event is the result of 52 separate rehearsal sessions of small groups of eight led by choir director Greg Funfgeld.
The program includes Robert Parsons Ave Maria; traditional favorite Ding Dong Merrily on High; Go Tell It on the Mountain; as arranged by Paul Sjolund; and the choir s traditional concert closer, Franz Xaver Gruber s Silent Night.
