Southend seafront traders taken to court by council

SEAFRONT traders could be taken to court after refusing to pay membership levies to Southend BID, it has been revealed. A number of businesses failed to pay the annual £455 membership levy during the Covid-19 pandemic, citing frustrations at cancelled events. Now, Southend Council is taking legal action with one trader who failed to pay receiving court summons. Traders pointed towards cancelled events during the pandemic, in firework displays and the Christmas lights switch-on, as reasons for their lack of payment. However, the BID team have insisted it is a legal requirement to pay. Southend seafront almost guaranteed to be closed over meet

However, this has done little to allay fears with bosses worried a last minute change could see hundreds descend on Southend. According to the Facebook group, a “specific location will be revealed hours before the event”, planned to start at 6pm. Martin Terry, councillor in charge of community safety, said: “We have to wait for the intel, but if an event like that is going on, it’s almost guaranteed we will see the roads closed again. “We have to put community safety first. Disruption is far better than having a serious injury caused by these drivers.” Mr Terry insisted traders would be given notice of any closures, after frustration circled at the last minute announcement last week.

Anti-social behaviour in Southend branded out of control

SOUTHEND is “out of control” with “London gangs fighting over drug dealing territory”, it has been claimed after two stabbings on the seafront. In another night of chaos in the town, two teenagers were stabbed in a targeted attack on Marine Parade, shortly before 7.40pm on Monday. Both teenage boys were taken to hospital where one boy remains in a serious condition. A huge dispersal order was put in place following the attack, with police searching 12 teenagers for weapons. A number of knives were recovered but police have been unable to confirm how many were found and what action was taken.
