Two Wounded in Opelousas Shooting
Two people are in the hospital after an early morning shooting in Opelousas.
Police Chief Martin McLendon says that shooting happened a few minutes before 3 a.m. on Park Avenue between Ina Claire and Mouton Streets.
According to McLendon, officers found two victims when they arrived at the scene. One of the victims was shot in the chest. The other suffered what McLendon says is a non-life-threatening injury. Both were taken to the hospital.

Opelousas Police arrested man wanted for attempted murder

Opelousas Police have arrested a man wanted for attempted murder.
Desmond Richard, 30, was arrested about 4:20 p.m. on a warrant for attempted-second degree murder. He also was booked with Illegal possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felon in possession of a firearm, No Driverâs License and No proof of liability insurance.
Police were acting on info probided by an off-duty St. Landry Sheriff s deputy. Using the vehicle description supplied by the off duty deputy, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle being operated by Richard on Railroad Ave. Upon taking Mr. Richard into custody he was found to be in possession of a stolen handgun. Mr. Richard was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail.

An alert off-duty sheriff s deputy is credited with helping Opelousas police catch an attempted murder suspect.
Desmond Richard was arrested over the weekend on attempted second-degree murder and gun charges. As of Monday, he remains in jail.
Police Chief Martin McLendon says the off-duty deputy spotted Richard and called police to tell them of Richard s location. Police found the car Richard was driving, pulled him over, and arrested him. Police say they found a stolen gun in Richard s possession while executing the arrest.
