Ready to revitalize: Work on Auburn's $10M grant projects underway

There s a saying that central New York has two seasons: snow and construction. With snow most likely gone until the end of the year, construction has indeed become more visible around the area. In downtown Auburn, though, some of that construction is announced by a sign: Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Almost three years after the city was named a winner in New York state s $10 million grant contest, most of the 13 projects that will receive a piece of that money have begun. This week, The Citizen reached out to their stakeholders for an update. One thing all 13 projects have in common — besides the $10 million grant being a source of their funding — is COVID-19. Their progress has been slowed by the economic ripple effects of the pandemic, though some have been slowed more than others. COVID-19 also delayed the finalization of the city s grant agreement with the state, said Tracy Verrier, executive director of Cayuga Strategic Solutions and co-chair of the commi

Cayuga County Mash-Up: Area's seven breweries make first beer together

AUBURN — One recent morning, Prison City Brewing s Dawn Schulz realized it had been awhile since she visited Cayuga County s other breweries due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That s when she knew it was time to do something she had wanted to do for awhile longer: the first collaboration beer made by every one of the county s breweries. Thursday at Prison City s new urban farm facility, owners and brewers from all seven of those breweries finally convened to make what they would name Cayuga County Mash-Up. The India pale ale, which will be available in about a month, features Citra, Sabro, Hallertau Blanc, El Dorado and Cascade hops. The latter was sourced from Ledyard Hops, making the beer all the more locally rooted.

Cayuga County Craft: Local brewers talk legal marijuana, COVID-19 impact

Cayuga County breweries agree that COVID-19 has made the last year a transformative one for their industry. But there s less consensus about how they be affected by the recent legalization of marijuana in New York state. For this edition of Cayuga County Craft, I asked our breweries to look back and look ahead: How has COVID-19 changed beer over the past year? And how might legal marijuana change it over the next? All the breweries who responded were quick to describe how the pandemic has disrupted their business. The major change, they said, has been the precipitous drop in traffic in their taprooms due to both New York state guidance and customer discretion. As a result, packaged beer has become a much bigger priority for them than draught beer. More of their product is going in cans than in kegs, if not all of it. So breweries like Aurora Brewing Co. in Ledyard and Prison City Brewing in Auburn can not only sell more beer to go, they can distribute it to stores they couldn t be
